What Kind of Salt is Suitable to Use on Porcea Stone to Remove Ice and Snow?

October 28, 2022

Porcea Stone outdoor porcelain tiles are durable, beautiful, and readily available. That's why they have become a popular landscape material among homeowners, builders, architects, contractors, and designers in Canada. Our products are the ideal choice for a wide range of landscaping projects. They are chameleon-like and can replicate just about everything from wood and concrete to natural stones like travertine and limestone

Porcelain pavers are considerably cheaper than some equivalent natural stone options in the market and can withstand the harsh weather of North America. They are also easy to maintain. Still, certain rust and stains can be hard to remove once they've set in. And once winter rears its ugly head, you'll shift to cleaning tracked-in snow from cleaning tracked-in dirt.

Winter may be a wonderland but you need the right de-icer for that persistent ice to ensure your tiles are not slippery. However, some salts contain iron deposits that can leave marks on the stone. Also, there are times when the machine used in crushing or grinding the salt has corrosion or rust in the grinders, leaving behind particles of the iron dust mixed in the salt. Hence, knowing what kind of salt is suitable to use on Porcea Stone to remove ice and snow is vital. Aside from preventing costly slip-and-fall accidents, it can help protect your beautiful tiles and ensure they last longer.

How to Identify Salt on your Flooring

Salt often appears on your outdoor porcelain tiles in the form ofd white splotches or small granules. These arre usually residues of salty water left to dry on the flooring. Salt will often leave a white mark on your tiles. However, never assume that there’s no salt residue just because there are no visible stains. Also, some ice melts will leave a slick film rather than a white stain. So make sure to check and see if your floors feel greasy or sticky.

Different Types of Deicer

Ice melts come in various types. Knowing which one to use on your beautiful porcelain tile can help protect and prolong its lifespan. Please keep in mind all of these products should always be tested in a side area of your project first or on a spare tile. We do not take responsibility for damages caused to the tile that may be caused by incorrect product selection or application.

Acetate. Acetates are available in three varieties. These include potassium acetate, calcium magnesium acetate, and sodium acetate. In comparison to a chloride-based ice melt, this type is entirely natural. Likewise, it breaks down in the atmosphere. It may be an expensive option. This ice melt does not work at very low temperatures but thrives at a temperature above 20F.

Sodium Chloride or Rock Salt. This type of deicer is the most popular and inexpensive. It works well at temperatures above 15F. However, it can damage your flooring if you do not remove the salt residue or are adequately protected. Hiring a professional is recommended when using rock salt. Doing so can help prevent costly repairs or permanently damage your surfaces.

Potassium Chloride. You can buy potassium chloride as a fertilizer. The mild deicer only works at 25F temperatures and above. This kind is not quite as effective as the others. Most people use it for getting rid of snow and ice is because its impact on the environment is low. Moreover, it is more forgiving on stone surfaces and is biodegradable.

Magnesium Chloride. The lower toxicity of magnesium chloride makes it a bit more acceptable for hard surfaces. It can melt snow and ice at temperatures as low as 0F. So despite its price, it's gaining in popularity. You can also buy it in liquid, pellet, or flake form.

Calcium Chloride. The ice melt is available in liquid, flake, and pellet forms. Calcium chloride is quite costly, and its toxicity level is the highest. It also creates a lot of mess when you track it inside your home. Hence, it is not the best choice for your porcelain floors. Similar to the deicers above, it will not work at very low temperatures but works well at 20F and higher.

Avoiding salt during winter is nearly impossible. So once you see salt on your Porcea Stone outdoor porcelain tiles, avoid leaving on the surface for a lengthy time period. Similar to most dirt, stains, and spills on your flooring, the longer salt sits, the more likely it is to mark your tiles and become difficult to remove surface markings. However with elbow grease and a tough cleaner, most markings can be removed from the surface.
